Corded vs Cordless

Mountfield offer both Corded Electric lawnmowers and Cordless battery powered Electric lawnmowers in their range and the focus of today’s review will be on their corded versions (the cordless options will be reviewed at a later date). These Corded Electric lawnmowers are significantly cheaper than the Cordless lawnmowers so they will be a better solution for you if you are seeking the lowest possible price level.

Mountfield Princess vs Mountfield Electress

The main differences between the Mountfield Princess Corded Lawnmowers and the Mountfield Electress Corded lawnmowers is the Princess Corded lawnmowers has a much longer power cord of 15m where the Electress Corded lawnmower only has a shorter power cable of 10m length.

The Mountfield Princess corded lawnmower also offers you additional features such as the rear roller and the mulch plug and the power levels in the Mountfield Corded Princess versions are 200W more powerful that the Mountfield Electress corded lawnmowers in the same categories. For these reasons, the Mountfield Princess Corded lawnmowers will always be more expensive than the Mountfield Electress Corded lawnmowers

Power Cables

Before deciding on a corded Lawnmower, make sure to check the length of the lawn to the nearest power socket. If your lawn is long and narrow beyond 12m, then you should invest also in an extension cord as these power cords from Mountfield range from 10m to 15m in length.

Mountfield Princess Corded Lawnmower Review – 2 options

Option 1: Mountfield Princess 34cm 1400W Electric Lawnmower

The smaller Mountfield Princess corded lawnmower offers you a mowing path width of 34cm and a motor power level of 1400W (Electress 34cm version is 1200W). The grass collection box is small and robust at 35 litre capacity which is similar to other small corded electric lawnmowers in the market and it tends to be on sale for less than £150 when seen at the time of our review.

The weight of this lawnmower is 13kg and there are 6 mowing heights that range from 2.5cm up to 7.5cm which is controlled using a single lever. The big attraction here is the longer power cord of 15m, the rear roller and mulch plug and it also comes backed with a 2 year warranty. In addition, you have a vision window for the grass box so you can see how full it is as you work and the handles can be folded down after use.

Price Guide: £120 - £150

Option 2: Mountfield Princess 38cm 1600W Electric Lawnmower

This larger Mountfield Princess Corded lawnmower offers a wider mowing path of 38cm (4cm wider) and a more powerful motor power of 1600W (200W more power) which works better with coarser, damp and thicker grasses. Even at that, if you grass has grown out of control, you should start at the highest mow height setting and work your way down on the second and third pass.

The grass collection box is slightly larger at 40L capacity (5L larger)  and it’s a heavier lawnmower to push around coming in at 15kg. If you need the lightest possible lawnmower, then this model wouldn’t be the best solution for you.

It also has the rear roller, a mulch plug and the same mowing heights 2.5cm to 6.5cm similar to the Princess 34 version. In addition, the power cable provided is 15m long which attaches to the top handle and its covered with a 2 year warranty

Price Guide: £180 - £230

Pros for the Mountfield Corded Princess Lawnmower (5)

  • You get the rear roller and mulch plug included which are not always available with other lower priced electric corded lawnmowers
  • There is a much longer power cord of 15m length where most other power cords from other brands are only 10m to 12m in length – this reduces the need for an extension cord.
  • They can cover larger lawns than the Electress up to 80-100m2 as they come with the longer power cord.
  • The handles have a nice grip and they can be adjusted and folded down after use for tighter storage spaces
  • There is no emissions, no fuels or oils and you don’t have to worry about recharging batteries plus you have a constant power supply

Cons for the Mountfield Corded Princess Lawnmower (5)

  • There is no self-propelled support so you need to do all the pushing yourself and the power cable connection to the handle is flimsy and tends to slip – this needs to be tighter and clip in better as it slips out too easily
  • The quality of the stripes from the rear rollers is somewhat limited as wouldn’t be as good as many of the rear roller petrol self-propelled lawnmowers we have seen
  • You need to develop a technique of avoiding the power cord as you mow your lawn. It’s a headache once you start but gets more manageable once you get the hang of it.
  • The price range for the Princess will cost you more than your average lower priced cheap lawnmower
  • Assembly instructions for the grass box could be a whole lot better and needs to be improved

Mountfield Electress Corded Lawnmower Review – 2 options

If you want a lower priced Mountfield Corded Electric lawnmower, then you should choose one of the Mountfield Electress lawnmowers outlined below. They have shorter power cords at 10m, the motor power is lower and they don’t have the rear rollers or the mulch plugs which explains the lower price range for these lawnmowers.

As the power cords are shorter, they are only suitable for smaller lawn sizes of 50-80m2 in our opinion unless you also buy a long extension cord
